I Love “An American Werewolf in London”!

If I had to pick a favourite film of all time, I’d eventually settle on An American Werewolf in London. I love that movie so very much. It’s that rare thing, a horror comedy where there’s a perfect balance between horror and comedy – the scares are scary and the jokes are funny, but they don’t cancel one another out. Over 30 years on and the effects still pretty much hold up, and the ‘moon’ songs on the soundtrack stay just the right side of knowing winks. It’s utterly English without straying into the worst excesses of Richard Curtis-ism. Every character is memorable and feels completely real. House of the Wolf Man

“House of the Wolf Man” is an indie horror flick that probably escaped most people’s notice during it’s first release. It came out around the same time as the remake of the original Wolf Man . While it would be easy to label it a shameless attempt to cash on the brief interest in classic horror, it seems like it has it’s undead heart in the right place. It’s star is a very tangible link to classic horror, with a last name that sound perk interest in any monster buff. “Ron Chaney.” Yes, that’s right, the great grandson of the Man of a Thousand Face and the grandson of the original Wolf Man himself.

The bloody terror of Transylvania owes a large debt to Universal Studios for cementing his cinematic legend with Tod Browning’s 1931 film. Starring the iconic Bela Lugosi, the movie started Universal’s long association with horror and monsters.

There are classics and then there are cult classics. Films held so dear by genre nuts that it’s hard to write a traditional review of them. If you grew up in the ’80’s and ’90’s, Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad was such a film. A sort of holy grail for monster fanatics, the movie features almost all of the classic monsters, updated lovingly for the 1980’s. Absent only is the Invisible Man, but I think that can be forgiven.
