Monster fans meet Zuul crurivastator(Zool CRUR-uh-vass-TATE-or). , a newly discovered ankylosaur whose resemblance to the infamous Ghostbusters hell hound could not be denied.
The terror dog looking skeleton is one of the most complete and best preserved skeletons of this group of dinosaurs ever found. It includes a complete skull and tail club, and preserved soft tissues.
Research describing the new species is published in the May 10 issue of the open-access journal Royal Society Open Science. As far as it’s spooky sounding name, paleontologist Victoria Arbour had this to say…
“Me and my co-author David Evans were batting around ideas for what to name it, and I just half-jokingly said, ‘It looks like Zuul from Ghostbusters,'” she said. “Once we put that out there we couldn’t not name it that.”
The dinosaur’s body — ribs, belly and hips — is still encased in 15,000 kilograms of rock. There is also soft tissue to try to recover ancient proteins from.
“In the same quarry around the skeleton there were lots of other animals and plants that lived in the same environment as well. We’ll be able to reconstruct the whole ecosystem,” Arbour said. “This is just the beginning, but we’re obviously very excited about it.”
Well, everyone here at horrormovies.net is wishing you luck. We love both dinosaurs and Ghostbusters, so this is a perfect storm of awesome! Just don’t go digging up Gozer next.
